How do I scan my first receipt?
Tap the Scan tab at the bottom of the screen. Point your camera at a receipt or invoice and tap the shutter button. DocSafe will automatically extract the vendor name, amount, tax, and date using on-device OCR.
After scanning, review the extracted details on the confirmation screen. You can edit any field before saving.
Can I import receipts from my photo library?
Yes. On the Scan screen, tap the photo library icon (bottom left) to choose an existing image from your photos. The same on-device extraction will run automatically on the imported image.
How do I add tags and projects to a receipt?
After scanning, or by tapping any receipt in your Vault, open the detail view. Tap the tag or project field to add or edit labels. You can create custom tags to organize receipts by client, project, expense category, or any system that works for you.
Your vault
Where is my data stored?
All data is stored exclusively on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. Nothing is ever sent to any server. There are no accounts and no cloud sync unless you opt into iCloud (a future Pro feature using your own Apple ID).
What happens if I delete the app?
Deleting the app removes all locally stored receipts and images from your device. Because there are no external servers, there is no way to recover data after deletion. We recommend exporting a backup (CSV, PDF, or ZIP) before uninstalling if you need to keep records.
How do I delete a receipt?
In the Vault tab, swipe left on any receipt and tap Delete. You can also open a receipt's detail view and scroll to the bottom to find the delete option.
Can I search my receipts?
Yes. The Vault tab has a search bar at the top. You can search by vendor name, amount, tag, or project. You can also filter by date range and category using the filter controls.
Exporting
What export formats are supported?
DocSafe supports three export formats:
CSV — a spreadsheet-friendly file with all your receipt data (vendor, amount, tax, date, tags). Great for importing into accounting software.
PDF Summary — a formatted document listing all receipts, suitable for submitting expense reports.
ZIP Bundle — a compressed archive containing the CSV, the PDF summary, and all original receipt images.
How do I export my receipts?
Tap the Export button in the Vault tab (or from the Settings screen). Choose your preferred format — CSV, PDF, or ZIP — and tap Export. iOS will open the standard share sheet, letting you save to Files, send via Mail, AirDrop, or share with any other app.
Can I export only a subset of receipts?
Yes. Apply filters in the Vault tab (by date, tag, or project) before tapping Export. Only the currently filtered receipts will be included in the export.
Scanning accuracy
The extracted amount or date is wrong — how do I fix it?
After scanning, the review screen lets you edit every extracted field before saving. If you've already saved a receipt, tap it in the Vault to open the detail view, then tap any field to edit it. All edits are saved locally on your device.
Why does OCR sometimes miss text on a receipt?
OCR accuracy depends on lighting, focus, and receipt quality. For best results:
— Shoot in good, even light (avoid harsh shadows or glare)
— Hold the camera steady and wait for it to focus
— Flatten the receipt before scanning
— Make sure the entire receipt is within the frame
Thermal paper receipts (the shiny kind) can fade over time and may scan with lower accuracy.
Pro & purchases
What does the Pro upgrade include?
Pro unlocks unlimited receipt storage and will include iCloud sync across your Apple devices in a future update. The free tier supports a limited number of documents.
How do I restore a previous purchase?
Go to Settings inside the app and tap Restore Purchases. Make sure you're signed in to the same Apple ID used for the original purchase. If you're still having trouble, contact us at the email below.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds for App Store purchases are handled directly by Apple. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com and sign in with your Apple ID to request a refund.
Privacy
Does DocSafe send my financial data anywhere?
No. All data — your receipt images, extracted text, amounts, and tags — is stored only on your device. Nothing is transmitted to any server. DocSafe uses no analytics, no crash reporters, and no third-party SDKs.
The app has a dedicated Privacy Policy page with complete details.
Why does the app need camera access?
Camera access is only used to photograph receipts inside the app. The image is processed entirely on your device using Apple's Vision framework. It is never uploaded or shared.
